Disconnecting

I’m in Toronto for work, and with wifi at our office and the hotel, didn’t have much of a reason to get a data plan.

So, I spent Sunday exploring the city with my data turned off, and it was really nice:

  • Unable to get a quick dopamine Facebook or email, I talked with tourists on the bus, read longform articles on my phone.
  • When I had to find something, I needed to play a game of “find the Tim Horton’s” for wifi, or just ask a kind stranger for help.
  • My text messaging worked, but at $0.50 per, I thought long and hard about what I wanted to say to people.

It felt great— probably one of the more peaceful, engaged, and productive days I’ve had. I’d like to do this more, and wish there was something like Freedom or SelfControl for mobile devices.
